OUR HISTORY

Stockport County were one of the first non-premiership clubs to set up a women’s team following a partnership with the local authority. ‘The Ladies’ Club was formed in 1989/90 and was an instant hit. The club had some success in the early years but there were a number of problems that resulted in some members breaking away and forming a separate club - Stockport Ladies FC.

​From 1999 a major focus was on re-establishing a good relationship between Stockport County Ladies and Stockport Ladies with the ultimate aim of bringing the two clubs back together to form one of the biggest Girls’ and Women’s clubs in the country at that time.

For the start of season 2000/2001 the Junior section of Stockport Ladies was incorporated into the Stockport County LFC set-up, and at the end of the season the final link was made, with the amalgamation of the two clubs under the umbrella of Stockport County Ladies FC.

In 2019 the First Team achieved promotion back to the FA Women’s National League Division One North, the fourth tier of women’s football. This means that in season 22/23 they are playing at the same level in their ‘pyramid’ as Stockport County ‘men’.

Stockport County FC have supported 'The Ladies' in the past, providing match kit for Senior Teams and helping with sponsor support, but season 2020/21 saw a major development in co-operation between the two clubs following a change of ownership at Edgeley Park.

2022 saw ‘The Ladies’ playing their first home match at Edgeley Park, beating Leeds United 4-2, with a record crowd for a County Ladies game, on a cold February night. Club end of season presentations also moved back to Edgeley Park function rooms.

Edgeley Park also hosted last season’s FA Women’s National League Play-Off Final between Wolves and Southampton, for a place in the Women’s Football Championship. A significant game in the women’s football calendar.

Following the stop-start seasons during the global pandemic we look forward to continuing to build the relationship between ‘The Men’ and ‘The Ladies’ going forward in the ‘New Era’ at Stockport County under Mark Stott’s ownership.
